IMPORTANT HEALTH AND SAFETY INFORMATION FOR ALL VISITORS
The risk of infection from a farm visit is very small, but the diseases caused can be very serious. By following simple guidelines, similar to everyday basic hygiene recommendations, the risk can be easily minimised.
It is important that all visitors are aware of the correct health and safety guidelines.
Do not allow children who are petting or feeding the animals, to place their face or mouth against the animal’s or put their hands in the animal’s mouth.
Only eat or drink in the designated areas, never eat food which has fallen to the ground, or taste the food to be fed to the animals. Always sanitise hands thoroughly before and after eating, after any contact with animals. Your children are your responsibility during the visit.
You should supervise them especially during hand sanitation , to make sure that each child sanatises thoroughly. Young children may require extra help with this. Cover cuts, grazes, etc. with a waterproof dressing.
Do not climb on to animal pens etc.
Do not chase, frighten or torment the animals.
If a member of your group shows signs of illness (e.g. sickness or diarrhoea) after a visit, please speak to your doctor and explain that you have had recent contact with animals.
The Health & Safety Executive has produced guidelines about avoiding ill health at open farms (Industry Code of Practice: Preventing or Controlling ill Health from Animal Contact at Visitor Attractions)
